Abstract:

Mechanical shock testing that simulates a shock with significant velocity change typically applies the shock environment in six directions by six separate shock tests. In the real world shock environment that a test item experiences, the shock environment arrives at the test item in all six directions at once. Traditional six-axis drop table testing has always been an overtest because in addition to the six shock tests, there is always excitation in the other directions that occurs due to structural responses in the shock machine and the fixturing that attaches the test item to the shock machine. Recent shock development efforts are to create test configurations that are a simultaneous multi-axis mechanical shock simulation, and two examples will be presented.
