A Comprehensive Approach for Treating Closely Spaced Modes in the Dynamic Design Analysis Method

Dr. David Winkler, David Woyak, ABAQUS Inc.

Abstract:
The DDAM phenomenon known as closely spaced modes has been described as an artificial amplification of the response of a system.  In addition to supporting this position, this paper demonstrates that two modes with similar modal frequency may also cause an artificial attenuation of system response.  A semi-automated approach is used to eliminate both types of numerical artifacts for any tensor component or invariant.  The method is evaluated in terms of some baseline results.  It is shown that both types of closely spaced mode pairs may be evaluated for all DDAM analysis work without adversely affecting productivity.
