Consideration on Bridge Blast Analysis and its Damage Evaluation

Abstract:
In comparison with the building structures, bridge have different behavioral characteristics for its shape.  Long and slender shape of primary component gives the structure very high participation factors for several low frequency modes.  For building structures, one a component is subjected to the blast load, the behavior caused by damage would show immediately with the time frame of loading.  For the bridge structures, however, the response could more serious after the loading because of the engagement of some lower modes that can give critical influence to the behavior of the structure.

Sometimes damage can be found not only the blast loading zone but totally different side of the structure.  So, in the blast effect analysis of the bridge structures, modal behavior concept should be included.  And to produce practical index of damage, loading coefficient in design concept can be reflected.  In this paper, with simple bridge type structure, the behavior and influency of modal characteristics will be reviewed and  desireable analysis procedure for the bridge structures with practical damage index will be suggested.
