Abstract:
Minimizing system weight is one of the key requirements in the air
transportation of the Future Combat System, Manned Ground Vehicles in a C-130
military aircraft. At United Defense, a process was developed for
determining the optimum structural configuration of the Non-Line-of-Sight
Cannon using an integrated system level model. The process involves: (i) topologically optimizing the space claim model to
determine the optimum material layout; (ii) designing from the topological
results new structures that incorporate the optimized material setup; and (iii)
size and shape optimizing the new structures to obtain the lightest possible
designs that can support the structural loads and meet the natural frequency
requirements.
