Abstract:
The DD(X) approach for reducing the shock environment for machinery and
electronics equipment is to employ shock mitigated rafting systems. The
reduced shock environment allows for the use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)
or modified COTS (MOTS) equipment instead of heavier and more expensive shock
hardened equipment. The verification, validation and accreditation
(VV&A) process for the rafting modeling and simulation (M&S) design
approach is presented. Data obtained from DD(X) rafting testing is
compared with predictions obtained using M&S tools.
This paper focuses on the comparison of the test data obtained for the rafting
test articles with the M&S predictions. Test articles were built and
tested as part of the VV&A process. Standard MIL-S-901D heavy weight
tests using the floating shock platform (FSP) were performed.
Instrumentation included deflection, strain, velocity, accelerometer
and force gages. Instrumentation and data collection was provided by
NSWC/CD/UERD. Acceptance criteria for validation are also discussed.
